Tickets for our Mozart Great Mass Concert on Saturday 16 May are now on sale. Our special early bird price of $70 is available until 31 March. Tickets available here.
Described as ‘Great’ because of its sheer size, the Mass represents Mozart at his most daring and innovative and is a significant departure from his earlier church music.
Conducted by our renowned Maestro, Mario Dobernig, we will be joined by the brilliant Art of Sound Orchestra and four talented soloists, Molly Ryan, Soprano, Sally-Anne Russell, Mezzo Soprano, Jiacheng Ding, Tenor and Michael Lampard, Baritone.
Mozart composed the C Minor Mass to be a work of breathtaking scope featuring many virtuoso operatic arias for soprano and mezzo soprano and majestic choruses with division of the choir into two separate four part choirs. Considered his most personal sacred work, it was composed not out of economic necessity but out of a deeply-held conviction: a promise to his new wife Constanze, herself a soprano, who sang in the first and only performance to take place in Mozart’s lifetime at St Peters, Salzburg in 1783.
Mozart did not finish the work and the reasons for this remain a mystery - there is speculation that the practical pressures of needing to find financial work, personal demands in Vienna, or possibly the tragic death of his child contributed.
His planned big tenor and bass arias to match the scale of the soprano arias were not composed and large portions of the Credo and the complete Agnus Dei are missing. This highly regarded arrangement by Richard Maunder removes extraneous additions in earlier versions and remains faithful to Mozart’s original intentions.
Looking forward to seeing you at St Paul's Cathedral on the 16th May! You will experience the full force of Mozart’s genuis with melodies and themes woven together to create harmony and complexity and rich orchestral colours.
